Psalm 101:2-4

I will pay attention to the way of integrity. When will You come to me? I will live with a heart of integrity in my house. I will not set anything worthless before my eyes. I hate the practice of transgression; it will not cling to me. A devious heart will be far from me; I will not be involved with evil. Psalm 101:2-4

What a beautiful commitment to make. This is a plan for success. This is someone who knows what’s really important in life. When you understand the value of your actions, making choices for your life becomes critical. The heading in my Bible labels this Psalm, A Vow of Integrity. I love that. Making a vow to yourself to become who you want to be. Making a commitment to honor yourself and the God that you serve. If you don’t have a standard, what will you live up to.

I have another title, Goals to Attain. Why not? We set goals for weight loss, goals for purchases, goals for education, goals for relationships, and a myriad of other earthly things. (None of which add value to your character and spiritual maturity.) So why not make goals for growing spiritually? Why not work on things with lasting worth?

Goals help you progress. They give you a marker to work towards. Goals help you continue to move forward. Without goals you have no way to asses movement, either forward or back.

Or how about the title, Choosing to Change? Ah! Now that will put some responsibility on you for your day-to-day decisions. It makes you aware that you have liberty and freedom to decide who and what you will become. It’s determining upfront how you will live your life by the choices you make.

Vows, Goals, and Choices are the building blocks that determine who you will become. That is so important. Every day your heart and mind are being shaped and developed by what you are involved in. What you watch, listen to, and believe can destroy your character, joy, marriage, witness and more. Who you let influence you and hang out with can have a negative impact on your walk with the Lord. That is why the Psalmist says, “I will pay attention to the way of integrity.” Are you paying attention?

You are a product of your environment. What you practice, you become. What you watch shapes your thinking. Ask yourself what your favorite movies, TV programs and videos game are. What are the themes? What types of morals are being promoted? What behaviors are they encouraging?

Next, think about the 10 closest friends you have. What kind of influence do they have on you? Do they lead you in the ways of the Lord? Do they provoke you to draw closer to the Lord? Do they speak the truth and God’s word over you? Do they challenge you to be a better person? Is God pleased with your actives together? Do they lead you astray?

The Psalmist recognized the need to grow, mature, and change. He sets a standard to live by so that he can attain it. He makes a vow so he has something to live by. He creates goals that he can work on and gauge progress from and he makes a choice to take action.

How about you? Are you ready to make a vow of integrity? Will you set goals to grow spiritually? Why not make a choice today to set a standard in line with Psalm 101:2-4 and choose to become a mature child of God? You can do it my friend. You will not regret it.

  1. We sow a thought and reap an action. We sow an action and if we repeat that action we reap a habit. WE sow a habit and reap a character. We sow a character and we reap a destiny. I saw this somewhere and what Wisdom!!!!!!
