Genesis 6:9

These are the family records of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among his contemporaries; Noah walked with God. Genesis 6:9

Where do I begin? This text is so rich with information it will be difficult to stay on topic. For the purpose of this devotion I am going to focus on what God included in Noah’s family record.

The verse starts “theses are the family records,” then it proceeds to tell us of the character of Noah before we hear about his descendants. Did you get that? Who Noah was while he lived on this earth was so important it was included in his lineage (family history).

What a beautiful record. Not of the names of his descendants but of his life and example on this earth. He was a righteous man, blameless among his contemporaries, and he walked with God. What extraordinary things to be remembered for. What a wonderful heritage to leave your future generations.

When Noah’s children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren opened the family records, there for all of them to see, was the godly legacy of his life. God thought it was important and made sure the character of Noah was included in his family tree.

When we die the only thing left is our name and our offspring. Your name evokes thoughts and memories of who you are. Your body has very little to do with what you will be remember by. It’s your character, personality, and the actions you take that make you who you are. The Bible says “A good name is to be chosen over great wealth; and favor is better than silver and gold.” Proverbs 22:1

So let me ask you my friend, what legacy are you leaving for your descendants? What character traits will you be remembered for? What do you want your children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren knowing about you?

  1. I am grateful it is God our Heavenly Father that writes it. He is faithful and sees the beginning and the end. I can trust His words when He says I have loved you forever. No prejudice, no favortism, no partiality. His eyes go throughout the earth beholding the good and the evil. It is His word that will judge us and His word is truth. Thank you Jesus!!!!

  2. The faithfulness of our God is undeniable. Our loyalty to Him is our part to do in life. I have stood my ground against the enemy as it pertains to our descendants ONLY by the protection and hand of God. He has handed us the weapons, we just need to use them for warfare in defense of our children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and so forth. I have never faded from the title of mother, grandmother and great-grandmother! I use that God given title to always remind our descendants of the greatness of God and keep reminding them of their need for our Lord and Savior. I send them group texts now and then! It is my duty.
